Most of the money wasted on the way to a CPL is wasted by doing these out of order, paying for training before establishing medical fitness, or preparing for an examination that cannot be booked because the computer number has not come through.
Step by step
Check eligibility
10+2 with Physics and Mathematics. If you took a different stream, these subjects can be cleared through the National Institute of Open Schooling, it is a well-trodden route and not a dead end.
Establish medical fitness
Get the Class 1 medical assessed early. It is the step most capable of stopping the plan, so it should come before any large financial commitment.
Apply for a DGCA computer number
Free, done on the Pariksha portal, and required before you can book any examination. Start it early because verification takes time.
Ground classes
The theory instruction for the DGCA papers, Air Navigation, Aviation Meteorology, Air Regulations and Technical General, plus Technical Specific for your aircraft type. This is the part SkyArth does.
Clear the DGCA examinations
Computer-based, 70% to pass, each paper cleared independently with no aggregate and no grace marks. A cleared paper stays valid for five years toward a CPL.
Flying training
Done at a DGCA-approved flight training organisation, in India or abroad, building the flight hours DGCA requires for a CPL. Check the current CAR for the exact hour requirement and composition before you budget.
RTR(A)
The radio telephony licence, examined separately from the DGCA theory papers, and required before your licence is issued. Easy to leave too late.
Licence issue
With papers cleared, hours flown, medical current and RTR(A) held, the CPL is applied for and issued.
What catches people out
- Sequence beats speed. The medical and the computer number both take calendar time you cannot compress, so start them while you are still studying.
- Choose the flying school after the theory is under way, not before. You will make a better decision once you understand the syllabus you are being sold against.
- Budget for the whole path, not the next step. Ground classes, examinations, medicals, flying hours, type rating and licence issue are separate costs at separate times.
Questions
How long does it take to become a pilot in India?
It varies with how quickly you clear the theory papers and how consistently you can fly, since flying is weather and slot dependent. The theory stage is the part you control most directly, which is why clearing it efficiently matters.
Can I become a pilot without Physics and Maths in 10+2?
Yes. Those subjects can be cleared through the National Institute of Open Schooling and are accepted for the purpose. It adds a step rather than closing the route.
Do I need to go abroad for flying training?
No. Training can be done in India or abroad at a DGCA-approved organisation, and each route has trade-offs in cost, weather, and the conversion work required afterwards. Decide it on your circumstances rather than on reputation alone.
What does SkyArth do in this process?
We are a ground school. We teach the theory papers and advise on sequencing and flying school selection. The flying itself is done at a DGCA-approved flight training organisation.
